Carrying cash safely

  • Do not carry large sums of cash with you
  • Do not tell everyone that you are going to the bank to draw/deposit large sums of money
  • Alternate the dates and times in which you deposit cash
  • Be alert of your surroundings when leaving the bank
  • Whilst driving be on the look out to see if you are not being followed back home or to your business premises


Criminals use websites to trick you into giving out your information. Never click on an internet banking login link in an email or SMS. Your bank will never ask you to login to verify any information or authorize payments via email or SMS.


The criminal practice of using social engineering over the telephone system to gain access to private personal and financial information from the public for the purpose of financial reward. The word that is a combination of "voice" and phishing.

Card fraud

Card fraud - Shoulder surfing

  • Always cover the hand that is typing in the PIN when using an ATM
  • Do not accept assistance from strangers when transacting at an ATM
  • Read the ATM screen and follow steps before attempting to transact.
  • Never share your PIN with anyone including bank officials
  • If you suspect that the ATM is faulty or you are distracted, cancel the transaction immediately and report the fault to the bank and use another ATM
  • Always check if the card that was returned by the ATM is in fact yours
  • If your card has been retained, do not move away until you have reported the incident by using the telephone number appearing on the ATM. Your card could have been swapped

Card Fraud – Skimming

  • Never let your card out of sight
  • Insist that the POS device is brought to you
  • Ensure that you get your own card back after every transaction
  • Sign up for My Updates in order to get your notifications if a transaction went through your account


Holiday scams

  • Research your details for holiday bookings thoroughly, do not rely solely on the information advertised on the internet
  • Be cautious of buying airline tickers via the internet for a much cheaper price that the commercial rates as they may have been acquired fraudulently
  • Don’t fall for holiday packages that are available at very cheap prices. If it seems too good to be true, it usually is

Internet fraud

  • When doing online banking, ensure that you are on a secure website and not a “spoof” site by clicking on the security icon on your browser tool bar to see that the URL begins with https rather than http
  • Never click on a link provided in an email
  • Do not send emails that contains information such as your card number and expiry date
  • Place sensible limits on your account and review them regularly
  • Have the latest security updates installed and ensure that the anti-virus/ant-spyware software is running
