Card use when traveling abroad

Are you planning to travel abroad? You can now activate your cheque or credit card so you can safely use it while travelling.

In future we will add extra card features to the App, giving you more ways to manage your card – such as changing ATM withdrawal limits and temporarily / permanently deactivating your card while travelling.

A maximum currency conversion fee of 2.75% of the rand value of the transaction applies to all international transactions.

  • Where can you make changes to use your card abroad?

    This feature is included in the Standard Bank Mobile App, available for iOS or Android smartphones.

    1)    Download the App for iOS or Android   
    2)    Register, sign in to the App and link your card/s
    3)    Go to Settings
    4)    Select the card you want to use while you’re abroad
    5)    Select Use card abroad and change the setting to On

  • What should you tell us about your trip?

    As part of our fraud monitoring service, we flag transactions made in certain countries as ‘high risk’. To make sure your card transactions won’t be declined because of these flags, please let us know about your upcoming trip.
     
    To notify us of your travel dates, follow these steps:

    1)   Sign in to the App and go to Settings
    2)   Select the card you want to use while you’re abroad
    3)   Select Use card abroad and change the setting to On
    4)   Confirm your departure and arrival dates
    5)   Select which countries you’ll visit (up to nine)
    6)   Add alternative contact details should we need to contact you while you’re away
    7)   Confirm your settings by tapping Done
    8)   Take note of your reference number in the top right corner

     

  • When should you tell us that you’re travelling overseas?

    You can notify us at any stage. However, it’s better if you inform us before you leave – so that you can be certain your card will work when you arrive at your destination.

  • Are you getting declined transactions while you’re overseas?

    Simply sign in to the App and let us know that you are travelling. Follow these steps:
     
    1)   Sign in to the App and go to Settings
    2)   Select the card you want to use while you’re abroad
    3)   Select Use card abroad and change the setting to On
    4)   Update the countries you’ll visit, as well as departure and arrival dates
    5)   Add alternative contact details should we need to contact you while you’re away
    6)   Confirm your settings by tapping Done
    7)   Take note of your reference number in the top right corner

  • Do you need to make changes to the dates or destinations during your trip?

    You can easily amend your travel details in the App:
     
    1)   Sign in to the App and go to Settings
    2)   Select the card you’re using while you’re abroad
    3)   Ensure Use card abroad is set to On
    4)   Update the countries you’ll visit, as well as departure and arrival dates
    5)   Confirm your changes by tapping Done
    6)   Take note of your new reference number in the top right corner

  • How can you turn off travel notifications?

    1)  Sign in to the App and go to Settings
    2)  Select the card you used during your time abroad
    3)  Change the travel notification to Off
